We’re in the middle of a lovely and busy week here, that begins with Howard’s birthday and ends with Ava’s. I’m surrounded by Librans. Family and friends.
Every year Howard takes this week off so we can have a week long celebration which is mostly a week long celebration of Ava’s birthday because that’s how it goes, no? And we like to make a big deal about birthdays. I like to imagine that no matter how little a Little is, these experiences seep right into their bones and fill them with a sense of magic and love which is lifelong.
Ava, who is about to turn 3, of course had a very specific idea of what she wanted this year. A rainbow party, a rainbow cake with white icing ‘like the ones we google please Mama’ and a birthday dress. Check, check and check.
And so the day started with her birthday dress, laid out on her bed, which has become a sweet little tradition with all of Ava’s mama made dresses.
This dress was a mixture of patterns I love and some winging it along the way. Inspired by the amazing whimsy and unkempt dresses in ‘Carefree Clothes for Girls’ I wanted to keep it soft but also a little Georgian too…because I think Ava would suit being in Pride and Prejudice.
The ruffle sleeves are unhemmed, so the edges are a little frayed. The skirt was made from some super luxurious heavy bronze hand embroidered silk and stitched on the outside of the bodice…again unhemmed, to add a little more romance and wildness to it.
It turned out just right. Twirly, autumnal and a little bit period drama and Ava practically ripped off her pyjamas to get it on.
It was of course teamed up with her treasured pink sparkly clippy-cloppy shoes. Hmm.
And although some friends couldn’t make it, our house still seemed to be spilling over with happy children and adults and a lot of food.(Baked potatos as party favours? Why not)
And my near 3 year old had so much fun playing with her friends, opening presents and eating cake (generously made by Francesca since I am not so good at baking)
I think 3 is a perfect age for a party. Ava was in her element today, with such a wonderful mix of people.
Now her and Ezra are conked out in bed and we have a whole house to tidy (I can spot a half-eaten rainbow doughnut wedged under the table) but not before I have some tea and birthday cake and watch another episode of The Newsroom.
